The French Quarter Cocktail

This week New Orleans is alive with Mardi Gras celebrations.  Places like Bourbon and Basin Street are famous for great jazz, amazing Creole cuisine and some of the best cocktails to be found anywhere in the world.  Over the years we have shared with you the Classic Cocktails of New Orleans and below have listed links to six of the most famous.  Today we add to that list with a delightfully simple concoction from the 1957 edition of the Old Mr. Boston Bartender’s Guide called The French Quarter Cocktail.  It is strong and sweet and lifts one’s spirits like a bowl of gumbo or listening to Louis Armstrong play “What a Wonderful World.”  Hey folks it’s February and it can get a bit boring around here this time of year.  Why not slip into one of these great cocktails and “Laissez le bon temps rouler.”

The French Quarter Cocktail

In a shaker glass filled with cracked ice add:

  • 1 Ounce Rye or Bourbon (we prefer Rye for this drink)
  • 1 Ounce Benedictine
  • 1 Ounce Grenadine
  • ½ Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 1 Teaspoon Powdered Sugar (or 1 ½ teaspoons simple syrup)

Shake till painfully cold then strain into a Martini Glass.  No garnish is mentioned but we like a lemon twist.
